We Get By with Humility + Versatility

When Genius House launched in 2013, there was no way to predict that in seven years work would come to a screeching halt with humanity facing a global pandemic. Nowhere in the business plan, nor in our business owner nightmares, did we anticipate losing large scale productions, yearly spring/ summer shoots, and new projects (Cabo in June dammmmmnit) so suddenly. Who knew that solidified work could simply vanish from the production schedule and the books? Back in January and February, we were naively starting 2020 off incredibly strong, just entering our busy season, chugging along… and then within a matter of days, we weren’t. And of course, our Dallas-Fort Worth video production business is not alone, as this struggle has, is, and will be felt by so many humans around the globe.

While we definitely didn’t plan for sudden turmoil, the good news is that versatility is a part of our DNA.

Genius House started out scrappy and never allowed arrogance to be a part of the company culture. Of course everyone LOVES filming with a large crew over multiple days, traveling and working with generous budgets. Renting specialized gear and indulgent craft services are perks, but we still know exactly how to get resourceful, work within limitations, and maintain high production value. Having a hard-working core team allows us to be adaptable, save on markups and overhead, and have flexibility in every aspect of a project. From producing and shooting, to editing and graphics the GHM small but mighty work family has everything it takes to produce phenomenal videos.

What exactly does it mean for Genius House to “get resourceful?”

Some of the ways we have drawn on resourcefulness, adaptability and, versatility: taking a COVID-19 test and driving to a shoot instead of flying, multi-tasking on set to keep the crew safe and small, and helping our partners get by in any way we can, whether it’s streaming services or advice on ways to cut costs. Professional video production has many moving parts. In order to succeed directors, shooters, cinematographers, and editors have to be able to focus on their technical and creative craft. What empowers them, especially with a skeleton crew, is diligence in pre-production, no matter the scale and scope. Resourcefulness in producing is more important than ever. We have always believed that “with constraints comes creativity,” and now have added inspiration in “finding opportunities in challenges.”

As a small business, anxious moments may be unavoidable at times, however we find comfort in remembering that humility and versatility have always been Genius House strengths.
